We started our day off going to the Chinatown Hawker Market for lunch at Hawker Chang which is known for its world-famous Soya Sauce Chicken and was awarded a one star Michelin for its meal. You may be wondering what a hawker market is, Singapore is known for its hawker markets where you can find a variety of local food tastes – Indonesian, Chinese and Indian at low prices. Think of a hawker markets are like a huge food court. This was our first experience at one and it is an amazing experience. A rule of thumb is to choose a hawker based on how many people are in line to order. When we got there about 11:30am the line to Chang went around the corner and was a half hour wait.
After our lunch we visited the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and passed by the Sri Mariamman Hindu temple. Both are unique and are a strong part of the Singaporean culture. Throughout the streets are small shops offering low priced items for both the residents and visitors to Singapore.
After an afternoon rest from the heat and humidity, we took a tour that included a cruise on the Singapore River and into the bay. We were able to see the MerLion which spouts water into the bay. Following that we saw two light shows that were beautiful. The last one was in the bay below the Marina Bay Sands hotel with its distinctive boat shape across the towers. Ok, by the way, sitting in the bay is a divided shaped Apple Store.
We finished off the evening stopping by another Hawker Market for a late dinner.
